Mrs. Wright’s 5th Grade Math Class
Hi Tiger families! How are you this week? This week the kids and I are excited to be learning about subtraction and we’re using several different activities to teach this important life skill. You can help, too! Last week you helped your child learn math by watching the numbers adding up at the gas pump or by talking about comparing prices before buying. Below are some ideas for talking about subtraction out in the wild tiger jungle of Central Ohio. I also share my tech tip of the week and share about how we’re learning together to be kind and brave! Next week we are going to learn about volume. I would love to hear how your math conversations are going at home and talk with you about your child’s progress in my class. Fill out the contact form at the end of this newsletter, or come to my open office time between 3-3:30 every Thursday and Friday. We can also do a Zoom call during that time, just email or text me what day you would like to meet and I will send you the Zoom link.
Math Work this Week

In 5th grade math we are learning about adding and subtracting money amounts! Here is a good free math website where you can practice at home if your child wants to show off their new skills – totally optional! More 5th Grade Skills To Look For at Home
Family Math Time!
Talk to your child about how you use subtraction at home, at work, or when you run errands!
Examples
When comparing the price of canned goods at the grocery store, you might find one can that is priced at $1.00 and another that is $0.50. Tell your child that by subtracting .50 from 1.00, you learn that you can save .50 by getting the less expensive can, or buy two and invite a friend to dinner! Sometimes price is not the only thing that matters, though, when it comes to food. You can also compare the ingredients in each can and ask your child if they think it is worth paying .50 more!
Career Connections

Family Tech Tips
“Don’t assume kids know to keep passwords private. We always tell kids sharing is caring, but in this case, it’s OK to NOT share.”

Tigers Help Each Other Out
In our classroom, in addition to math, we are always learning new ways to be kind to our classmates. You can help by asking your child about whether they helped a friend with their math that day. By helping others learn, they also learn better!
