Parent Leader Story: Parents & Pages Reading Sidekicks

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Rychel developed the “Parents & Pages: School Sidekicks” initiative.

Rychel created Parents & Pages to increase parental involvement in schools while promoting early literacy and a love of reading. Recognizing that families often feel disconnected from the school community, the project encourages parents to spend time on the school campus reading with students, assisting in classrooms, and engaging in school activities. Their presence not only supports student learning but also strengthens the bond between home and school.

The program’s goal is to create a welcoming environment where parents feel empowered to participate in their child’s education. Through flexible scheduling, clear communication, and collaboration with school staff, the initiative makes it easier for families to be involved. Parents are invited to volunteer for a few hours or a full day, with opportunities to read aloud, support small group work, and contribute to classroom projects.

Parents who attend the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy design projects and create a plan to implement them locally. Want to be inspired by more parent leadership stories or attend the Academy? Visit our Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy page!
