Parent Leader Story: My Brother’s Keeper Mentorship Program

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Cassandra developed a mentorship program for middle school boys. Read more about her plan below.

Introduction

I stepped into this role because I care deeply about children and understand how important family involvement is in their success. Being a parent leader gives me a voice to be able to advocate for my child, other people’s children, support other parents, and help shape a stronger, more connected community. As well as building on my leadership skills and gaining confidence. My project is addressing the lack of mentorship opportunities for young boys. While there is currently a program in place to support young girls, there is a gap when it comes to providing the same level of guidance, encouragement, and structured support for boys. This project aims to fill that void by creating a mentorship program specifically designed to offer positive male role models, social-emotional support, and leadership development opportunities.

Goal

My goal is to establish a consistent and impactful mentorship program for young boys that promotes positive male role modeling, strengthens social-emotional development, and supports academic success. The proposed strategy is to partner with My Brother’s
Keeper and Graham Elementary and Middle School to recruit mentors from their program and launch a consistent mentorship program that supports young boys through guidance, leadership development, and academic encouragement.

Expected Outcomes

The outcome for students participating in My Brother’s Keeper is positive growth both academically and personally. Students will build stronger confidence, develop better behavior, and improve their decision-making skills. They will also gain a sense of belonging and support, knowing they have mentors who are invested in their success.

Potential Challenges

One challenge I anticipate in promoting and implementing My Brother’s Keeper is gaining consistent participation and support. Some staff or families may not fully understand the program at first, and it may take time to build trust and interest.

Next Steps

The next step is to formally present My Brother’s Keeper to the leadership. During this meeting, I will clearly explain the purpose of the program, its goals, and how it will support young boys through mentorship, guidance, and positive role models.
I will also share my plans to connect the school with My Brother’s Keeper by contacting MBK representatives and linking them directly with the school. This will help establish a partnership.
