Parent Leader Story: The HOPE Initiative

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Dr. Roschelle developed the HOPE initiative.

H.O.P.E., which stands for Helping Our Pupils Emotionally, was created to support high-functioning students who silently struggle with anxiety and depression in Cleveland, Ohio. These students often appear to be doing well academically but face internal emotional challenges that impact their attendance, engagement, and overall well-being. The project aims to create a calming, judgment-free space within the school where students can go when they feel emotionally overwhelmed.

The program’s goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment equipped with sensory tools, journaling materials, and trained staff to help students regulate their emotions. A simple referral system will allow students to access the space without disrupting learning. The initiative also includes staff training in trauma-informed care and ongoing evaluation to track student outcomes. By fostering emotional regulation and reducing isolation, the project seeks to improve student participation, reduce absences, and promote a more inclusive school culture.

Parents who attend the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy design projects and create a plan to implement them locally. Want to be inspired by more parent leadership stories or attend the Academy? Visit our Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy page!
