While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Kimu developed the “Empowering Middle School Student Success” initiative.
The Empowering Middle School Student Success project was created to address declining academic performance, emotional challenges, and limited family engagement among 6th and 7th-grade students in Licking Heights. Recognizing middle school as a critical transition period, the initiative introduces targeted academic support, social-emotional learning (SEL), and parent education to help students thrive.
The program’s goal is to improve academic outcomes, increase student engagement, and support emotional well-being through a multi-tiered approach.
Key strategies include:
- after-school tutoring
- peer mentoring
- workshops to improve social and emotional skills during the school day
- monthly parent education sessions
- partnering with community organizations for resources and mentorship opportunities
