Parent Leader Story: Access to Essential Resources Through Panther Pact

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Maria developed the “Panther Pact” initiative.

Panther Pact was created to address the growing need for access to basic essential items among students and families in the New Lexington School District, where poverty rates exceed the state average. Inspired by her own experiences growing up in poverty, Maria launched a care cart at the elementary school level to provide students with hygiene products, clothing, and school supplies—no questions asked. The initiative aims to reduce stigma, restore dignity, and ensure that no child has to choose between basic needs and their education.

The program’s goal is to expand access to essential resources for both students and the broader community. Through collaboration with school outreach staff and local organizations, Maria plans to establish a permanent, judgment-free space where families can take what they need. This initiative promotes student confidence, academic focus, and community well-being by removing barriers to basic care and fostering a culture of compassion and support.
