Parent Leader Story: Early Spark: Igniting STEM Passions in K–3 Learners

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Lolita developed “Early Spark: Igniting STEM Passions in K–3 Learners”.

Early Spark was created to address low math and science proficiency among K–3 students in Columbus City Schools. The project aims to introduce engaging, hands-on STEM learning experiences early in a child’s education to build confidence, curiosity, and foundational skills.

The program’s goal is to ignite interest in STEM by launching the Annual CCS STEM Family Fair—a districtwide event that brings families, educators, and community partners together. The initiative also includes take-home STEM kits, classroom activities, and monthly family challenges to strengthen school-home partnerships and extend learning beyond the classroom. Community collaboration and parent involvement are central to the program’s success.

Parents who attend the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy design projects and create a plan to implement them locally. Want to be inspired by more parent leadership stories or attend the Academy? Visit our Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy page!
