Parent Leader Story: Engagement Equation Improves Trust and Communication

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Kelly developed “The Engagement Equation” initiative.

Kelly created The Engagement Equation to strengthen the connection between families, schools, and the broader community by addressing barriers that often prevent parents from participating fully in their children’s education. As a parent leader across multiple schools in Cincinnati, Kelly recognized that meaningful family engagement is essential to student success.

The initiative focuses on three core goals:

  • improve communication between schools and families;
  • build trust between families and school staff; and
  • reduce barriers for families to engage.

The program’s strategies are designed to foster academic achievement, improve attendance, support social-emotional development, and promote equity across all student populations.

Parents who attend the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy design projects and create a plan to implement them locally. Want to be inspired by more parent leadership stories or attend the Academy? Visit our Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy page!
