While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Melshanique developed the “Read & Rise: K–5 Literacy Empowerment” initiative.
Melshanique created Read & Rise to address early literacy gaps among K–5 students in Fairfield, Ohio. Recognizing that reading proficiency is foundational to academic success across all subjects, the initiative centers on a free summer literacy camp designed to boost reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence. The camp, held in partnership with Effective Family Life, offers structured instruction and family engagement opportunities to support students most in need.
Melshanique’s goal for the program is to improve reading skills through engaging summer instruction while building a year-round culture of literacy. Key strategies include: raising awareness about the camp, encouraging enrollment, and rallying support through school clubs, parent groups, and community fundraisers. The initiative also promotes collaboration between teachers and families, recognizing that strong school-home partnerships are essential to student success.
