While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Jessica developed the “Mentorship Rewards Program.”
The Mentorship Rewards Program was created to address chronic absenteeism, low self-esteem, and academic performance among students in Dayton schools. The program connects students with older peers or community leaders to foster motivation, support, and academic growth.
The program’s goal is to create a school culture where every student feels connected, encouraged, and inspired to succeed. By identifying both mentors and mentees, and offering incentives for participation, the initiative aims to improve attendance, boost self-confidence, and raise test scores and graduation rates. Community partnerships and family engagement are central to the program’s success, with surveys and feedback loops ensuring continuous improvement.
Despite challenges such as transportation, scheduling, and sustaining engagement, the program has already led to stronger school-community ties, increased parent involvement, and a more positive school climate. A dedicated program coordinator has been identified to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
