Parent Leader Story: CommUnity Back to School Resource Fair

While participating in the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy at the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, Ohio parent Amanda developed the “PCSD CommUnity Back to School Event” initiative.

As an active PTA parent leader and member of the Parma City School District’s strategic leadership committee, Amanda collaborated with parents, educators, elected officials, and community members to address key district challenges. Her focus on multilingual learners and mental health revealed a pressing need for accessible resources and communication, and stronger community connections – especially for families navigating language barriers and limited support systems.

In response, Amanda proposed a district-wide back to school resource fair designed to unite families, schools, and local organizations. This event serves as a one-stop hub for health, education, and family services, while also celebrating the district’s cultural assets. With over 900 students speaking 30 languages, the fair aims to promote belonging, provide essential tools, and strengthen trust between families and schools.

The initiative also includes a long-term implementation plan focused on building awareness, addressing barriers, enhancing social media outreach, and sustaining engagement through student ambassador programs and community partnerships.

Parents who attend the Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy design projects and create a plan to implement them locally. Want to be inspired by more parent leadership stories or attend the Academy? Visit our Family Leaders for Ohio Schools Academy page!
