Specializing in Family Engagement to Support Students with Disabilities

Individual Professionals Path: Level 3, Option 4

The focus of this specialty seminar will be on healthy communication with families to ensure a team-based approach to supporting students with disabilities. A second emphasis of the seminar is how to learn from and with families about how to support students with disabilities through accommodations, modifications, and school transitions. The seminar is delivered in a flipped instructional model. You will first complete one self-paced online module to build your background knowledge related to family engagement to support students with disabilities. Then you will join an instructor-led online workshop session to apply knowledge to your setting and collaborate with other learners.

Learning Objectives:

  • I can explain how the evolution of disability impacts the experience of children with disabilities and their families.
  • I can identify successful strategies to collaborate with families of students with disabilities.
  • I can support families in conversations with their children about the future.
  • I can create a multi-tiered family engagement plan to support students with disabilities.

Outcome: The outcome of this specialty seminar is to create a multi-tiered plan for family engagement to support students with disabilities.
