Understanding Math Standards and School Math Learning

Ohio has math standards for each grade level. Understanding your state’s math standards can help you discuss with your kids what they are learning in school and support math education at home. Here are short video clips created by the University of Texas at Austin that show what these standards look like in K-12 classrooms.

Want to see some positive statements that kids can tell themselves when they get frustrated?

In a parent workshop from Los Angeles Unified School District, they share the following self-talk examples with families:

  • I will make connections between this problem and others like it!
  • I will change my strategy if I am stuck!
  • I will check my answer using a different method.
  • I will persevere!

The parent workshop resource includes growth mindset statements designed to help students develop perseverance and confidence in math, as well as creative ways to incorporate math into everyday activities, such as planning a party or grocery shopping, to make learning more engaging. The workshop also introduces eight math practices that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.

Here is an online “readiness” check, from Learning Heroes, where parents can see their child’s current skills in math and literacy.
