Talking to Kids about Social Media

This handout from The Kids Mental Health Foundation provides parents and other adults with conversation starters to use in conversations with their tweens and teens. One of the best ways to reduce the risks kids face online and through social media is a strong relationship with their parents and other trusted adults. When you build trust and keep conversations open, you can work in partnership with your child to help them get the benefits of connecting online, while also improving their digital literacy and safety.

Here are some example conversation starters:

  • Who do you follow on social media?
  • What interests you about their posts?
  • How do you feel when people like your post? How do you feel when they don’t?
  • How do you feel after spending time on social media?
