Ohio School Story: Sharing progress with emotion regulation

“At my previous internship site, we did a lunch bunch with kids about how to deal with big emotions. My supervisor (school counselor) shared updates every week with their families about what we did and ways to reinforce what they learned in the group at home.

Example: Today, we talked about pressing pause when we have big feelings. Kids did a great job of brainstorming things that can help us calm our bodies. Some of the options we listed were:
• Count to ten
• Box Breathing
• Hug a Squishy
• Read a Book for 10 mins
• Ask “Can I have a few minutes by myself?”
• Listen to favorite music
• Take a walk
• Spend time with your pet
• Ride a bike

We will be checking in next week to see how pressing pause over the long weekend went. If you as a family member notice any growth over the next few days, please let me know so that we can celebrate together.”
