The Family-Friendly Partnership School Walk-Through is a document that explains how to have a team do a tour and evaluation of your school building. It can be conducted by a team of representatives selected by school personnel to help gather information on whether families and community members feel they are welcomed partners in the school. This process is more meaningful when a range of stakeholders are able to provide their honest perspectives. If there is already a team with open, trusting communication at the school with family and community representation on it, they would be ideally positioned to complete a walk-through. Additional family and community representatives could be invited to participate on the day of the walk-through. Ensure minority group members are present and encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas, as they often have experiences that differ from those of majority group members. Results will provide the school with information on how welcoming and inclusive the school appears to various groups, which will allow the school to implement new strategies to make the school more family-friendly and improve family engagement.
