Using the video and handout below from the National Center for Improving Literacy, families will learn to:
- Ask specific questions of school staff to understand the materials and curriculum the school uses to help kids learn to read.
- Spot ineffective materials being used to teach their child to read, such as by reviewing their child’s schoolwork sent home.
- Request specific and effective strategies from their child’s teacher(s) to support literacy skill development, using language the school will understand.
The materials below, and their emphasis on ongoing family-school communication, are consistent with Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement.
