Dr. Joyce Epstein’s framework for family involvement outlines six key types:
1. parenting,
2. communicating,
3. volunteering,
4. learning at home,
5. decision making, and
6. collaborating with the community.
The framework emphasizes the shared responsibility of educators, families, and community partners to support the education system and children. By using this framework, schools think more comprehensively about their family engagement strategies and bolster their systems of support for involving families.
Dr. Epstein founded the National Network of Partnership Schools, and continues to support schools and districts to become Partnership-oriented Schools.
