In her work on adult learning principles, author and education consultant Elena Aguilar emphasizes that for professional development and learning experiences to be effective, they must align with how adults learn best. Drawing from adult learning theory, often associated with Malcolm Knowles, Aguilar identifies several key elements that should guide adult education. This resource, reformatted into a handout by the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center, reviews six core principles and offers prompts for educators to reflect on their experiences, encouraging them to think about how they have applied or encountered these principles in their work with adult learners.
Our Center utilizes these principles often as we create learning experiences for educators and parents/caregivers. We hope you find them to be useful as well!
