The University of Florida’s Literacy Institute (UFLI) provides free online resources for teaching reading. One resource they offer is called a Word Mat. Parents and Educators can use this online learning tool to help students practice forming and sounding out words at school or at home. There is a Word Mat for beginning readers, and there is a word mat for intermediate readers who are ready to practice words with vowel teams in them (like ai, au, ee, ea), words with digraphs (like ch, sh, wh), and other intermediate skills. The buttons below will take you directly to the word mats and videos with examples of how to use them.
These resources might be particularly helpful for students who need extra practice, such as students with dyslexia. However, all students and families could benefit from having access to this resource for learning outside of school time.
