Ohio is working hard to make sure that all young children get the basic reading skills they need to be successful in school. At the beginning of each school year in Kindergarten – Grade 3, schools check to see if children are reading as well as they should be for their grade level. If your child’s reading skills are not on track, your child will receive extra reading help in school.
This guide from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce provides you with questions to ask your child’s teachers Kindergarten – Grade 4. In the guide, there is a one page roadmap for each grade. The road maps show when schools will check your child’s reading progress, how the school might communicate with your family, and information about what supports the school will provide for your child.
*Note: There were changes made to Ohio law in Summer 2023 related to the 3rd grade reading guarantee. Families will now be given a choice about whether or not their child will be retained in 3rd grade or advance to fourth grade.
